CALENDAR OF EVENTS
Annual Celebration
April has be designated as Dixie History Month and we will have a day long celebration on the grounds of the Dixie County Cultural Center. There will be food, music, vendors, displays and so much more. So make your plans to join us as we celebrate and preserve our heritage. The day is April 17, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. More information will be coming as we continue our planning.
Jackson Water Hole Park
This park was created by the Society to memorialize the place where Andrew Jackson and his troops stopped to camp and water their horses during a raid on the Seminole Indians in 1819. The park is located approximately 2 miles north of Horseshoe Beach, Florida, on State Road 351. This park is open everyday and free to the public.
Parade of Homes
Our annual Holiday Parade of Homes is held the first weekend of December. We have local homeowners and businesses that decorate in Christmas fashion. They open their homes and businesses for your viewing pleasure. You may tour the homes at your leisure and enjoy the beautiful sites. This is one of the biggest fund raisers for the Society.
School Scholarship
Each year at graduation the Historical Society presents one senior from Dixie County High School with a $500 scholarship. Each participant must write a 500 word essay describing "What the History of Dixie County Means to me".
Fish Bone Cemetery
This cemetery was dedicated on March 19, 2000, to the families of those buried there. This cemetery is located east of the Shired Island Highway (County Road 357), approximately two miles north of Shired Island. Stop for a stroll down the trail to the cemetery. This site is open everyday and free to the public.
